Deposition from the Cross

Mid-11th century
Two descents from the cross for the price of one!

These Roman-era sculptures, which came to the museum separately, have been brought together as all three represent characters from the scene of the Deposition from the Cross. This is a very rare theme in 11th-century sculpture, presenting the moment when Christ is removed from the cross on which he was tortured. Today, the association of these objects has been reconsidered.
