Portrait of a Roman Soldier

2nd century BC
Roman mummy

If the man portrayed could tell his life story, he would have so much to tell us! A Roman soldier who travelled to Egypt, on his death he was mummified, in keeping with local customs. How can we explain such familiarity with the Egyptian religion?

His face turned towards us, a piercing gaze, skin gently weathered by the sun, and black, wavy hair: the portrayal is strikingly lifelike.
