Reliquary cross

Circa 1210-1220
A surprise cross

This double cross – with two horizontal segments – stands out for its precious decoration, explaining its function. It was, in fact, a container for a fragment of the cross on which Christ was crucified, hence its shape. How did this important relic come to be in our collections? Each square centimetre of this object is decorated meticulously and represents characters related to the Crucifixion – in other words, the moment Christ died on the Cross.
