Descent into hell

This man has every reason in the world to feel burdened with sadness and despair because he stands at the gates of hell. Accompanied by three almost identical figures in the artist's original design, together they form the Three Shades which were intended to crown the pediment of a gigantic doorway. It was a State commission (1880) for the future Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, but the project was never delivered.
