Did Vincent Van Gogh really see these cows grazing in a meadow in Auvers-sur-Oise for himself? It’s not so sure... This small, brightly coloured canvas is actually a copy of a copy! By way of explanation: the artist had in his possession an engraving made by the famous Doctor Paul Gachet (1829-1909), itself inspired by Jacob Jordaens' painting, "Study of Cows", also held at Lille Museum (see image below).
