Painting emotion

The Descent from the Cross, depicted frequently in the 17th century, was interpreted in several versions by Rubens. The one that hangs in Antwerp Cathedral is still his most famous. His approach in this – widely imitated – Lille masterpiece lends a poignant tone to this episode from the Gospels.
