Raphael made several paintings of the Virgin and Child. The "Madonna of Alba" - named after one of its owners - was executed in 1510-1511 and is one of his most famous paintings of the subject. It is currently kept in the National Gallery in Washington. The success of this work and the subsequent commissions contributed to the creation of a myth around Raphael and his Madonnas, through the delicacy of their features and their bold compositions.
