Balthasar van der Ast was a pupil and brother-in-law of the flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert, and with him one of the most famous pioneers of still life painting in the Netherlands. Jan Davidsz de Heem, his pupil, and Jan van Huysum are his worthy successors.
