A French painter who worked in the 19th century, Eugène Delacroix brought a breath of freedom to an art world hitherto ruled by the very official Académie des Beaux-Arts. Following in the footsteps of Géricault, he became the key figure in the romantic school. He had his critics at first, but his later career was hugely successful. He was receiving constant commissions right up to his death in 1863.
