Hieronymus Bosch was a Flemish painter of German origin. Little is known about his life and only forty or so works have been attributed to him with any certainty. He headed a well-known and highly prosperous studio. Several of his works are based on parables and Bible stories. His paintings express the religiosity of his day and the struggle between good and evil. He also clearly made fun of his contemporaries, whom he included in his paintings in grotesquely satirical fashion in order to expose their vices.
