Born into a family of scholars and artists, Luc-Olivier Merson enjoyed rapid success and received numerous commissions throughout his career, notably for the decoration of public buildings (the Sorbonne, Paris City Hall, the Opéra Comique). He was elected to the Academy in 1892, beating Carolus-Duran and Benjamin Constant, whose paintings are also featured in the collections of the Lille Museum.
