Born in Paris to an English couple who had moved to France for business, Alfred Sisley helped revolutionize the art of landscape painting. A friend of Cézanne, Monet, Renoir and Bazille, he joined them in founding the Impressionist group, based primarily on the art of painting “from the motif”. Of them all, he was the only one not to achieve true success during his lifetime. He died in 1899.
